

August Engkilde is a composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ and sound-designer.
August plays the bass, the keyboards and twists the computer knobs on more than 32 jazz, latin, electro, dub, hip hop, break beat, and other electronic/experimental releases. This includes among others “Kaotic Brain | Beautiful Noise” (Brumtone, Denmark), "Band of Inner Urge" (Storyville, Denmark), Police Beat Box (Cheap, Vienna), Mobile (Cheap, Vienna), E.P.O. (~Scape, Berlin), “Warum sollten wir angst vor großen Tieren haben” (Musicsystem, Copenhagen), Elektrazz (Musicsystem, Copenhagen), Pole (Mute, London) and Señor Coconut (Multicolor, Frankfurt a.m.).
Further, he delivered tracks for a number of compilations on various labels among others: Kitty Yo (berlin), Cheap (Vienna), Air France (France) and ~Scape (Berlin).
As a sound designer he made Tool records for the label and production group Musicsystem, which he founded together with the art-group Superflex.
August as well made the music for the 8 hour long art movie "The Wake" by Christian Lemmerz and Mikael Kvium, in collaboration with composer Dror Feiler and Dj Wunderbaum.
August is educated at the New School of Contemporary Music in New York and on Cuba by the Buena Vista Social Club bass-player Cachaito Orlando Lopez and the percussion-player José Alfonso.
At the moment August is involved in following live band projects: August Engkilde solo + with The Surface Constructors, Elektrazz, Manuela Krause and more.

2008: Brumtone, a new Label and music shop will open march 1st. To be releasing august’s material as well as Henning Christiansen, The Surface Constructors and more... August are working on music for several projects like, August Engkilde & The Surface Constructors, Manuela Krause, The Wundergrund Festival and Elektraz. The album “Kaotic Brain | Beautifull Noise” ready to be released March 1st.
2007: Finishing up the work on his new solo album “Kaotic Brain | Beautiful Noise”. Playing live with this new project in Japan, Germany, Sweden and Denmark. Just started the production of a new album for the singer Manuela Krause. A new project in collaboration with Richard Eigener and Patrick Pulsinger is under development. started a new label named Brumtone.
2006: Worked very intense on the coming August Engkilde solo project, as a follow up of the “Police Beat Box” album on Cheap, 2000. Started a duo in collaboration with Henriette Groth. Played several gigs and festival with this new Duo. Became a full board member of the Danish Jazz Federation.
2005: Played several concerts with his band E.P.O. and the Danish author’s Tomas Thøfner and Thomas Hvid Kromann. E.P.O. got selected by jazz.dk among 18 other bands in Denmark to be extraordinary promoted and supported internationally. The “Stringswing” band released the second album “Blue Hat”, Sundance Record, Copenhagen. The JAA project was born, JAA played a few gigs in Copenhagen and did recordings for their first album.
2004: Move to a new house, lots of constructiuon work. Held a clinic at the Rhytmic Conservatorie, Århus, about the interaction with computer live on stage. Live performing with EPO and Mindspray + August solo.
2003: Travelled to Cuba to make recordings for a new solo album "EPO", to be released 2004 and to record the "El Ritmo Lo Pongo Yo" Album in Collaboration with José Alfonso, release date unknown. Worked on new tracks for Elektrazz. Played several festivals and tours in Europe and Canada (Mutek) with Elektrazz, EPO, Señor Coconut, String Swing and Mindspray.
2002: Founded the Electroacoustic Panorama Orchestra, that is an open band playing with invited musicians in each country/City. Elektrazz released the first album "Elektrouble" on MUSICSYSTEM. Made 2 tracks for the Musicsystem double vinyl compilation "Musicsystem/Electric". October 16. August got a son. Recorded bass for Stefan Betke's album Pole/Pole released spring 2003 on Mute records, London. Recorded bass for the Señor Coconut album "Fiesta Songs, released May 2003. Recorded bass for the "String Swing" band, release date 2004.
2001: Held a kollokvium at the Roskilde university center, targeting students at the datalogic department, concerning The computer as a tool in the studio and on stage at live performances. Became a member of the Mindspray orchestra consisting of the poet Peter Laugesen, DJ Wunderbaum and trumpeter Lars Vissing. Mindspray released it's first album "Howl On!". In collaboration with Uwe Schmidt August founded the band to play live the Señor Coconut Album "El Baile Alemán", that is latin versions of Kraftwerk songs. Coconut toured around all Europe and Mexico. August recorded bas for the Flanger Album "Outer space", Ninja Tune London.
2000: Made music for the 8 hour long art movie "The Wake" by Christian Lemmerz and Mikael Kvium, in collaboration with composer Dror Feiler and Dj Wunderbaum. Made some remixes for Cheap and Kitty-yo label. Touring in Europe with a Live/DJ/Video version of "The Wake". Played the bass at The Royal Danish Theater for some months.
1999: Released the second solo album "Police Beat box" on Cheap records. Police Beat Box is a computer manipulated remix of a live concert of "Band of Inner Urge", spiced with some recordings from Indian cinemas. August played a series of concert in Europe with the Police Beat Box project.
1998: Won the 22th international jazz-festival in Getxo, Spain as a bass-player in the group "Out to Lunch". Started the band Elektrazz (elektro&jazz) in collaboration with the scratcher mr. Kruzh'em and the video performer Mbrain from Copenhagen Brains. Elektrazz started playing in Copenhagen and around Europe. Started DJ'ing as BIOBAS. Traveled in India for 11 month where he made cinema recordings for "Police Beat Box".
1997: Started the record label SuperflexMusic, later renamed Musicsystem, in collaboration with the art group Superflex. The Musicsystem label releases experimental tool records based on animal sounds among others as well as releasing various experimental electronic and acoustic listen and club music. The first release on Musicsystem was the “Warum sollten wir angst vor großen Tieren haben", by August Engkilde and Superflex. August also released his first solo album in 1997 "Band of Inner Urge", a latin jazz album on the Storyville label. August started the BIOBAS Studio in Copenhagen.
1996: Studied bass with Cachaito Orlando Lopez and percussion with José Alfonso in Cuba for three months.
1992-95: Played in various jazz bands in Denmark among others "Once around the park", August Engkilde Quintet, Tsunami, Thomas Hass Quartet, Søren Lee trio, Lee Brothers, Asger Siiger trio. Made music to the dance project "To Explore What?"
1990: Studied at New School of contemporary music in New York for one year. Teachers among others: Gary Peacock, Eddie Gomez, Kenny Werner, Billy Higgins.
1989: Graduated high school, began working as bike repair man, studied classic bass-playing with bow with Peder Linneberg. Started the first own jazz band "interplay".
1988: Took bass lessons with Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen.
1985: Bass player in local music school jazz band.
1984: Began playing upright-bass.
1980: Started studying piano, continued that for 6 years.
1978: Started playing in his first rock band as keyboard-player and bass-player, playing own songs

The Wake an 8 hour long art movie over the theme ”Finnegans Wake” by James Joyce. The Wake on DVD won the DVD Europe Award 2001 for "Most creative use of DVD's functions on a title designed for corporate use" at the DVD Forum Europe in London, 18-20 April 2001. The music is made in a collaboration between August Engkilde, Dror Feiler and Anders-Peter Andreasen.
