About Ljiljana Petkovic Orchestra
A combination of Eastern folklore rhythms, German Chansons, Jazz, Gipsy style inspired ballads as well as electronically treated beats and sounds - all together best described as “Urban Chansons“.
Ljiljana Petkovic is the personification of Manuela Krause's Slavic soul which she inhabited from her mother which also
provided her with at least 50 % of Bosnian blood, a fiery temper, a
strong passion for music and rhythm and her “melancholia”.
Manuela has a cabaret, musical and acting background. She used to sing
and dance in various projects, like “Cabaret 2010” - an adaptation of
the famous Broadway musical “Cabaret” where she played the starring
role of Sally Bowls. Her acting includes a starring role in the movie
“Zuckerstücke” by Arielle Artzstein, which was shown at Berlinale
“Forum”.
Manuela's passion for music and her unique deep and warm voice were the
reason, why the singer eventually became a professional radio
presenter. Since 1994 she has been working for different stations like
JazzRadio, KlassikRadio and Radio 1. These days she works as a
freelance presenter and she even started to produce her own show:
“Urban Peas Radio” on brumtone.
Manuela is a member of Barbara Morgenstern’s Chor der Kulturen der Welt
and sings tenor and bass. So far she has releases on Monika records
(with Pole), Superstar Recordings, Musicsystem and Micromusic.
About the first Ljiljana Petkovic album "Hinter Dem Spiegel".
The story starts with the colour yellow, the question “Warum sollten wir Angst haben vor grossen Tieren” and a curious mind...
Once upon a time, Manuela, a DJ at WMF Club Berlin, was looking for a new sound and therefore she went to a Berlin record store called “Gelbe Musik” and found the album “Warum sollten wir Angst vor grossen Tieren haben", by Superflex and the music producer and multi instrumentalist August Engkilde.
Manuela loved the concept and the amazing sounds of that album, that was all made up by samples of animal sounds. She contacted August for an online interview for de-bug magazine. And soon after an inspiring friendship was born.
Both Manuela and August share a passion for Eastern Folklore, gypsy ballads, jazz and electronic music and talked often about doing a project combining these elements. Now for the 10 year anniversary of their friendship, they are finally ready to present this project collaboration Live and on this new album.
Beside from 3 Cover Songs that perfectly fit in the concept, Manuela wrote all songs and lyrics and played them to August on her Casio Keyboard, Bells and Melodica. Next time they started the recordings. August made use of his production skills and his Multi-Instrumentalist talents. He further got Richard Eigner on board for some studio drumming and Manuela convinced her friend Dirk Markham to play some Balalaika style Guitar on a few tracks.
The first Ljiljana Petkovic Orchestra album release was on it's way... Their demo attracted the attention of event organizer Thorbjørn Tønder from Denmark and soon after the orchestra played their debut concert at the “Wundergrund Festival”. which took part in Berlin and Copenhagen in November 2008.
